How to Manage Pain After the Dentist

If you recently had a procedure that has left you with some discomfort, Dr. Bilski is here to share some tips on how to manage that pain with over-the-counter ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

Manage Oral Pain Without Opioids

Over the last few years, health care professionals have been fighting an epidemic of opioid addiction and abuse. As a result, many doctors are reluctant to prescribe any opioid post-treatment to try and keep their patients safe.

After years of study and research, many health care providers, Dr. Bilski included, have discovered that a simple regimen of ibuprofen and acetaminophen can have the same pain relief as Percocet or Vicodin without the risk of abuse or addiction.

Pain Relief Routine

  1. Take 3 or 4 Advil at 8:00 am
  2. Take 2 extra strength Tylenol at Noon.
  3. Take 3 or 4 Advil at 4:00 pm
  4. Take 2 extra strength Tylenol at 8:00 pm
  5. Take 3 or 4 Advil at Midnight
  • The maximum amount of ibuprofen/ Advil you can safely take in 24 hours is 3,200 milligrams.
  • The maximum amount of acetaminophen/ Tylenol 4,000 milligrams.
  • By following this routine to manage your pain, you will be under the daily limit, experience the same pain relief as with prescribed medicine, and not have to take opioids.

Typically, Advil works for about 8 hours, and Tylenol works for about 4 hours. Check with your doctor before using ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
